Tauranga lies on the coast in the North East of New Zealand's North Island. It is a peaceful place, with the main attraction being Mount Maunganui.
I shot Ilford 400 C41 black-and-white film and Fuji Superia Premium 400 colour film. I used the same camera and lenses as before, but this time I also have a semi-fisheye adaptor for my wide-angle lens. This allows for some very interesting, if distorted, photographs to be taken. It should also be noted that my camera's light-leak issues worsened significantly on this trip!
Ilford 400
This was the first time that I have shot black-and-white, so I was excited to see the results. From my first impressions, sometimes it can produce very nice, moody, authentic results, whilst other times the pictures can look a little 'flat'.
Dirt racing car rally at Burger King
Burger King sponsor a dirt car racing league in New Zealand, and a rally was held at the Tauranga restaurant. As an aside, Burger King is by far the cheapest place to pick up a hot meal in NZ.
It is nice how the edge of the image is blurred - bringing the viewer's attention to the centre!
The focus is perfect on this.
The contrast is great on this.
A very posh uniform shop
The Historic Village
This historical village is filled with art galleries, a cafe, community radio and a small, well-collated geological museum.
This shot worked out really well in B&W.
I don't like this shot so much.
For a subject with such a magnitude of colours, the film handled it well.
I should have taken the filter out of my bag to avoid reflections - don't be lazy next time!
One of my favourite things about New Zealand is the porches on the colonial era houses, such as this one here.
A lovely old-fashioned patriotic sign (the Kiwi is New Zealand's national bird).
Sadly the small nature of the photos taken with the fisheye mean that the negative scanner has had some issues with alignment!
Mount Maunganui
I like the bleakness on this image.
The contrast works well here.
This was a brilliant piece of artwork the wall of an infrastructure building. It looks just as good in B&W as in colour.
This is a little over-exposed, but it has created a very cool effect. It's almost as if a nuclear bomb has gone off.
This is the kind of shot that I feel would have worked out better in colour.
The clarity on this is stunning.
The detail in this is great, but I need to see where the exposure went wrong (too much or too little).
Reconnaissance!
Images are noticeably more contrasty in the sun.
The long walk home!
Unfortunately I missed the last bus, so I had to walk 8 miles back to the hostel! At least I got some pictures along the way!
Images are noticeably more contrasty in the sun.
Images are noticeably more contrasty in the sun.
The light was quite dull at this point, so I think that these troublesome trucks look better in B&W.
It was nice to see an old-fashioned turntable.
Fuji Superia Premium 400
I love the colour that this film produces, but it seems very succeptible to light leaks compared even to slide film. Most of my images were again light damaged, and this was the trigger for taking my camera to be repaired.
Just before reaching home, I passed this docked ship
Keep looking out for the red streaks (vertically through the image) and the lighter parts of the image towards the top left of images!
Ferguson Park beach and the surrounding area
This beach was a very relaxing place to spend a Sunday morning.
It was very windy!
This is one of my favourite recent pictures.
Lovely strong colours.
The colour is stunning. I shot this at f/16 to ensure maximum depth-of-field. It shows that the fisheye can focus relatively evenly, when used for macro photography.
I really liked this composition when I took it, I'll have to re-attempt something similar in the future.
BOP Vintage Car Club
The fisheye created some very interesting angles with the old vehicles.
It's like Mr Burns' car, just before he crashes into you.
James Bond's car.
The glint on this makes it.
The rose garden
The fisheye can also work well with plants.
Around Tauranga town
A lovely meal!
Poppies commemorating 100 years since Armistice.
Rail bridge
This old bridge, which appears to have been strengthened relatively recently, also features a pedestrian walkway. It bugs me that I didn't compose the image differently, considering the position of the boats!
